Volcanic eruptions formed the Canary Island archipelago, just off the coast of Africa. The smaller of the two main islands, Lanzarote is unique in natural beauty and rich in folkloric legend. Visit Puerto del Carmen for a view of the beaches of the island, which are primarily of black sand due to the eruptions of the volcanoes. The Timanfaya National Park is home to the Montañas de Fuego, whose landscape was created by continuous volcanic eruptions. On the northern end of the island, admire the Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees from the Mirador de los Helechos.
