Crossing the Atlantic on a true ocean liner is like sailing through history. These classic journeys evoke a different time, a golden era when travelers boarded elegant vessels to traverse the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe. Since 1840, Cunard has set the standard for trans-Atlantic travel. "Elegant," "refined" and "luxurious" are terms used to describe Cunard's Queen Mary 2, which combines the classic grace of yesteryear's ocean liners with the latest innovations of modern-day cruising. She sails six- and seven-day crossings between New York and Southampton, England, from April through November.

While QM2 recaptures the golden era of ocean liner travel, most trans-Atlantic cruises are repositioning cruises. These cruises typically last 10 days or longer, have very few ports of call and are ideal for people who love being on the open sea. Repositioning cruises are offered by many of the world's most popular cruise lines and take place in the fall and spring, as ships relocate from one cruising region to another. As winter approaches, ships leave Europe for the United States, the Caribbean and South America. When spring arrives, they return for summer cruising in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Repositioning cruises offer some terrific bargains with some of the lowest per-diem rates in the industry -- often less than $50 per person per day -- and they are all-inclusive, with meals, accommodations, enrichment programs, activities and entertainment included in one low price.
